Water Ponding: Why is it worst for your roof and leads to re-roof?

Water ponding, as the term explains, is a condition where water remains stagnant on your rooftop due to fault in the roof surface and lead to re-roof eventually.

It is a common problem and can happen with any rooftop due to a number of reasons. Generally, improper installation or hiring immature roofers are the reasons behind water ponding.

However, it’s not a fatal condition and can be easily avoided by being aware and alert. A well-designed, installed and maintained roof never faces the water ponding problem once in its lifetime.

Mostly, it is recommended by roofers to have a slight slope of at least 1/4¬” per foot to allow the easy flow of water and also, avoid the water ponding issue in the later years of roofs.

If your roof has water ponding issue and you are not doing anything about it, then we would like to enlighten you about the adverse effects it can have on your roof for a lifetime.

Please read the following effects of water ponding on a rooftop;

Permanent damage to the surface of roof

The stagnant water on the roof can deform the surface. The deck structure would deflate, creating more space for water ponding.

The structure and surface of your roof will be compromised and damaged permanently. Regardless to say, it will be really hard to get the damage undone or repaired.

Exposure of upper membrane to brutal weather

The surface that’s been deflated already by ponding water will not stop there. The damage will increase as the time passes due to the impact of weather.

If the house is located in a cold area, the snow and ice will ensure the surface and upper membrane of the roof is destroyed completely.

Algae and other bacteria

Of course, we cannot forget the other consequences of stagnant water. The water is not only damaging your rooftop but also inviting algae, bacteria, and germs.

Such vegetation growth is not good for the roof. It invites more dirt and debris. These things can clog the drain. Also, the may increase the volume of standing water.

An open area for filth

Your rooftop will become an open area for filth and dirt. The stagnant water will serve as a magnet to dirt, contaminants, debris and more. It is not good for the environment and don’t forget about the permanent damages it is causing to the surface.

To avoid, water ponding, the best practice is to be extremely careful when laying down the roof. It should have a perfect amount of slope. You should check if water is staying on the surface or not. Proper water ponding tests should be conducted.

In case, you have not built the house but bought it, we will recommend you to keep regular checks on the roof. Also, get a professional to test your roof for water ponding probability.

DIY ROOF REPAIRING PART 3

Of all the roof related troubles present up-to-date, replacement of tiles is the hardest task. Such kind of work requires excellent skills and extreme neatness, which can better be handled by professionals, like roofers Huddersfield. However, if you think you do not need any expert help and want to carry out tile repairing all by yourself, then you have landed at the right place. In this third part of DIY roof repairing, we shall help you sort out the tiling process of your home’s roof at your own.

Tile replacement:

Here is how to replace broken tiles of a pitched roof.
Depending upon the weather conditions your house has to face, roof tiles might be fixed to an underlying layer of wooden batten either with nails or clips. Hence, in order to set the damaged tile free from the batten, you must make use of a specialized tool known as ‘Slater’s ripper’, which you may hire from any hardware store if you do not wish to buy one.
Start your work from the point of highest broken tile. After using the cutter, you would need to slip out the damaged tile carefully. Slide away the adjacent tiles in an upward direction, and carefully tilt outwards the defected one. You may carry down the tiles one by one or you may collect them in a bucket.
Next, start wiggling the surrounding intact tiles and slowly slip the new one beneath them. Slide and position it until it fits onto the wooden batten perfectly.
Try replacing broken roof tiles at your own and save yourself some useful pennies.

Slate replacement:

Roof slate replacement works in the same manner as that of a tile, however, slate fixation requires use of metal strips. Start removing broken slate carefully, by shaking it left and right until it comes off. Be careful about the sharp edges.
Take metal strips and cut them at a length corresponding to that of the new slate. In the space emptied by the broken slate, fix the metal strip using galvanized clout nail, which should be at a distance of about 25 mm from the end.
Take the new slate and carefully slide it under the adjacent slates. Position it until it fixes properly. Grab the end of the metal strip which is protruding from the lower end of the slate and bend over its edge.
There you go! You have fixed a slate all by yourself.

DIY Roof Repairing Part 2

In our previous article, we discussed about roof repairing by oneself on a smaller basis. Now you shall come across some comparatively bigger defects, which you might not have known earlier that they too can be dealt without seeking professional help.

Leaks in flashing areas:

You cannot determine the amount of leak areas a roof can contain. Water can make its way even from the tiniest spot available. However, places in the roof where flashings are defected make favorable grounds for water leaks.
Flashings are actually thin pieces of an impermeable material which is installed in a roof so as to stop the entry of water into the roof stuff from a joint. They make an effective part of weather proofing system.
However, if a flashing is installed poorly, gets rusted or comes out loose, it makes an easy passage for water seepage. With the aid of few handy tools, you can fix this trouble all by yourself within a couple of minutes.
If in any case the above mentioned DIY method does not work, make use of roofing cement to cover the exposed joint area.

You would require:

[cs_list cs_list_type=”icon” cs_border=”no”][list_item =”too” =”null” cs_list_icon=”icon-tools3″] Screwdriver [/list_item][list_item =”tool” =”null” cs_list_icon=”icon-tools3″] Lead sealant [/list_item][list_item =”tool” =”null” cs_list_icon=”icon-tools3″] Dusting brush [/list_item][list_item =”tool” =”null” cs_list_icon=”icon-tools3″] Flashing clips [/list_item][/cs_list]
Method: Brush off any dust or remains of sealant materials or old mortals from the damaged joint. To push flashing clips into the joint, make use of a screwdriver to hold it tight in its place. Now grab the lead sealant and apply it in a continuous band fashion over the joint.
Fix holes in flat roof all by yourself:
Small holes are quite easy to fix. To restore the integrity of your roof which has been interrupted by tiny holes, you just need to fill them up with some resilient and compatible material.
For this purpose, all you need is:
[cs_list cs_list_type=”icon” cs_border=”no”][list_item =”too” =”null” cs_list_icon=”icon-tools3″] a primer with patching system [/list_item][list_item =”tool” =”null” cs_list_icon=”icon-tools3″] flat-roof roller [/list_item][list_item =”tool” =”null” cs_list_icon=”icon-tools3″] scissors and [/list_item][list_item =”tool” =”null” cs_list_icon=”icon-tools3″] brush [/list_item][/cs_list]
Brush off dust from the area to be treated, and apply primer over the hole, extending it onto the surrounding intact part as well for support. Allow it to dry. Cut out some portion of patching material so as to stick it on the primer-treated area. After sticking the patch onto the primer, use a flat-roof roller to convert it into an even surface.

Repair roof bubbles:

Moisture may get trapped in between the roof layers and may protrude outwards as a bubble. Dealing with roof bubbles is pretty easy. Use a knife to slit open the bubble into two. Cut out a thin strip from the middle portion so that the adjacent two sides can lie flat. Take a trowel to insert roofing cement under the flaps. Now apply a layer of roofing cement over a span of area that is 6” wider than the damage. Mix some amount of fiberglass mesh in the cement. Now apply another coating of this cement. Make use of a trowel to even the edges.
If any trouble with your roof seems invincible, it is always a wise option to access expert help from Huddersfield roofers.

DIY Roof Repairing Part 1

The integrity of the roof of your house matters a lot. The materials used to build a roof influence its stability and strength, and determine its longevity as well.
The roof may remain an ignored aspect of your home for a great period of time. However, for some days, anywhere in between a particular season, your roof may catch your attention by displaying issues such as leakage and cracking. This is actually a sign that you have ignored the health of a vital part of your home for long.
Approaching professionals every time your house’s roof creates a trouble is not always possible. Your pocket may at times stop you from asking professional help. Hence, in such cases, go for DIY methods of roof repairing. Such handy tips are easy to employ and can work for considerable amount of time as well.
So go through the following content so as to get some know-how of how you can fix your roof without expending unnecessarily.
DIY methods can also assist you in keeping the weak areas of your roof intact, until you get help from the roofers in Huddersfield.

Inspection:

Leakage is a really common issue in almost home. Not even the most carefully constructed roofs of a mansion or a palace are exempted from this menace. If you want to fix the leaks by yourself, then you first need to perform a thorough inspection in and out. Dribbling water is no big deal to locate. However, in case if you cannot track the line of water flow which is interrupting the structure of your roof, then proceed by removing away shingles from the region of the roof you suspect. This can aid you in tracking down the culprit source correctly.
Penetrations in the roofs form a favorable site for leaks. Check these areas too.
If your house has an attic, go there to check for water stained patches on the floor and the roof.

Fix leaking shiners:

A shiner is a nail which stands out alone in the roof, as it missed the frame which it was supposed to be attached to, when the roof surface was being fixed to the rafters. At times, these lonely protruding nails act as an outflow for water coming from an unknown source. A simple solution here is to bend the end of the nail upwards with the help of pliers, forming a loop. One can easily notice a dribbling nail in the attic roof mostly during summers.

Cover the holes:

Make use of rubber-washered screws to fill in tiny holes of the roof. Such holes are frequently present in a wooden roof, which can act as an outflow for constantly flowing water out from a mysterious source.

How To Check Your Roof For Leaks

I often get asked by customers how to check their roof for leaks and what areas are most likely to leak. Well the areas that are most likely to leak are where one surface meets another, we call these penetrations. For example, the chimney, a roof light, vent tiles or dorma’s. Chimneys are very susceptible as they have numerous ways in which they can allow rain water to penetrate them. The lead flashing’s can come loose or the pointing can erode allowing rain water to penetrate it.

When checking your roof it is always best to use a pair of binoculars and check the following areas:

Ridge tiles– look for any cracks in the mortar and the ridge/hip tiles
Roof slates/tiles– look for any broken or slipped tiles/slates
Lead work– check to see if the lead work has slipped or has any cracks in them
Guttering check the joints as these are most likely to leak and also the swan neck of the fall pipe where debris is likely to collect.
