Inspection of Flat Roof

Whenever you buy a new building either residential or commercial, it is suggested that one should closely observe the flat roof before investing in to it. Even if you own a flat roof since years, still it is a good idea to inspect the flat roof in a careful manner and be aware of how to maintain it. Leaks that remain undiscovered for longer periods of time can result in to devastating and costly particularly in the areas where the equipment is expensive or where paperwork is irreplaceable.

The first thing that you should check in the building is to check each and every room. Look at the ceiling if there is any kind of discoloration; if there is a leak then there will be dark colored ring that is usually there around the saturated area. If you see any of these signs then you should call professional roofers in Huddersfield before proceeding. If you came across the damage from a leak in any particular area then it does not mean that it is located just above there. It is due to the fact that flat roofs have several layers that may direct the water in to any other area in the building. It might be even many feet away. The damage can also be because of the plumbing leak or any other source. It can also be the case that the leak causing the stains was already fixed but ceiling was left like that. It is therefore required to hire the services of professional roofers.

If there is no discoloration even then one should inspect the flat roof. Cracks could be there that may lead to internal damage to the building in future. It is better to walk on the roof and do an inspection. Also look for the seals and penetrations. Penetrations are the areas like flashings and pipes that penetrate the roof. Check them for any cracks. Earlier these leaks may not be an issue but with the passage of time as water freezes in there, ice expands and crack causing leaks. Other serious issues with the roofs include the following:

Blisters: These areas appear as bubbles or as uneven surface.

Splits: They indicate the poor installation of insulation or poor building structure. Flashing in this area also fails.

Movement: If you see that the membrane has been removed from its original position then it can be because of steep membrane installed, thermal issues, or inadequate adhesion.

Damage: If you see the roof to be punctured then again cal for the professional roofers.

It is always recommended to call professional roofers that are trust worthy and reliable. Eagle Roofing is a reliable name in the roofing industry. Rubber Roofing: What, Why and How?

The weather in England was predictable once upon a time. Now, you should be prepared for torrential downpours or mild temperatures on unexpected days. In terms of property owners, it is high time to get their house prepared for the evil games of climate in the Huddersfield. One of the ways to protect your house or commercial building is by opting for rubber roofing. It ensures that your roof stays safe and keeps the effects of weather at bay.

What is Rubber Roofing

Rubber roofing is basically a hard rubber covering that serves as outer protecting membrane for your roof. It helps in resisting the damages of rains, strong winds etc. Rubber roofing can be installed by professional roofers only. They use a certain type of rubber and fix it with strong adhesive. In the end, a waterproof tape is used on all seams. There are plenty of rubbers available in the market for this job but most commonly used is ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM).

How to install it

Rubber roofing is an effective medium because of its flexibility as it can fit any surface. You can consider this option for any domestic or commercial building, garage, school, warehouse etc. EPDM rubber roofing ensures that the roof is protected and add years to the roof life.

  • Rubber roofing is a better option than tar, gravel, asphalt or concrete as it provides a solid barrier between your house and the environment.
  • Unlike other roofing options, EPDM doesn’t break or crack. It is resistant to temperatures ranging from -50C to 150C.
  • Rubber roofing is a cheaper option as compared to other alternatives. A good quality EPDM can provide protection up to 50 years.
  • Rubber roofing also has an impact on the insulation of the house, meaning the cost of electricity and heating bills will be reduced dramatically throughout the year.

How to avoid flat roof repair with roofing companies Huddersfield

Technically, a roof is considered flat if it has a pitch of less than 15 degrees. Most roofers have concerns with their endurance. The life span of a flat roof highly depends on the way it has been maintained for years. Also, the core material used to build the flat roof dictates a lot.

Flat roof made out of roofing felts or asphalt is more prone to defects than roofs generated using modern durable material like EPDM.

Flat roofs are open to all sorts of injuries like splitting, ponding, blistering etc. Only regular maintenance can save you from flat roof repair. So call roofing companies Huddersfield twice a year to get your roof checked thoroughly. It is also a great idea to get it examined after rough weather conditions.

Following are few defects of flat roof and how you can avoid them;

There are a number of reasons for flat roof splitting. Stress, pressures, water ponding and simply flawed workmanship can lead to roof splitting. Also, if the reflective paint on top of your roof is not maintained properly or there is too much activity on the roof then the chances of splitting are very high.

Water Ponding

Water ponding is actually stagnant water that refuses to leave your roof. It usually is rain water and due to no slope or sometimes clogged gutter, stays on your roof. The ideal way to deal with water ponding is by installing the automatic pump on the problem area. Also, while installing a flat roof, make sure that it has a recommended degree of slope that can drain the water from the roof easily.

The presence of air trap between the felt layers is known as blistering. When the roof heats up, the little air pockets might burst and if it is large then it creates a space for water to pass through the roof layers.

The blistering effects require a professional treatment that can patch up the waterproof layer on the roof again and restrict further damage.

Flat Roof Maintenance

In order to avoid the above-mentioned problems, it is always a great idea to go for regular flat roof maintenance. The recurring maintenance will cost you a small amount of fee but it will be much less in comparison to the flat roof repair.

Although don’t worry, the maintenance will be much lesser than that of a sloped roof. You must hire a professional and experienced roofer if you want this plan of avoiding flat roof repair to work because amateur roofers can create a mess and then you have to pay double to get the flat roof fixed by authentic roofing companies Huddersfield.

5 Ways to Make Your House Environment-friendly

We are living in the 2016 and the situation of global warming is getting worse with each passing day. So what are your contributions towards making our planet eco-friendly? Let’s start by making your home environment-friendly.

Solar powered roofing system

Did you know that if you don’t have a proper roofing system you end up having so many problems like you pay more in power bills because your ACs have to work extra hard in the day time as the heat seeping through the roof is too much? Also, in winters, your roof is allowing too much cold from outside and your heater has to work extra hard, which again is adding up to your power bills.

So a solar powered roofing system that forms a layer on the roof and the house so your home cannot be influenced by the outside weather is a very nice way to be eco-friendly.

Energy savers only instead of bulbs

The energy savers versus the bulbs are pretty easy to understand. The energy savers are as good as bulbs when it comes to the lighting but they cost so much less in terms of energy bills.

So if there is any bulb left in your house, you must change it as soon as possible. Also, the bulbs in lamps should also be replaced with the energy savers.

Mini Garden

The mini garden can be your direct contact with nature. Also, it is the best way to be eco-friendly. So you should think about growing a mini garden in your house.

Also, if growing a garden seems like a big deal to you then no problem, you can start with few plants and then move towards the mini garden.

Cover your swimming pool

Did you know that when your swimming pool is not covered, the water evaporates into the air? Can you imagine the amount of water lost because of your procrastination? So when the pool is not in use, you should cover it always. Also, it is a great way to keep your pool safe from dust particles and other mess.

Eco-friendly paint, even on the flat roofs

The wall paint is full of harmful and toxic chemicals. The size of your house will tell you how much you are harming the environment. So whenever you have to paint your house, make sure that you have bought the eco-friendly paint. The paint will be a bit expensive than the normal ones but it will be totally worth it.

Another thing that you can do is to paint your flat roof also. The thing with flat roofs is that they are less visible so people leave them unattended. However, you can use the same paint as on the exterior of the house on flat roofs to protect it.

Roofing Trends That Will Stay for Long

Every year we see a new trend in everything, be it fashion or roofing system. Some of these trends vanish quickly while others become part of the mainstream culture.
Today we are going to focus on the roofing trends that became a part of everyday roofing phenomenon. These trends include gutters, roof colors, roofs’ shape and more.
Check out the four roofing trends by roofers in Halifax that will stay for long below;

Maintenance In Order To Avoid Bigger Damage

Every home comes with a gutter and that gutter is the source of many problems. An ill-maintained gutter ensures that your roofing system does not work properly, the clogging creates drainage problem and so on. So people have to invest in the maintenance of the gutters.
However, instead of hiring professional roofers, the trend is to do the regular cleaning yourself so that you can save yourself from the bigger damages. In case, if you are still unlucky, there are many gutter repairs in Huddersfield option available.

Light Color Roofs to Lessen the Amount of Energy Absorbed

Whether you Google it or just observe in your neighborhood, the dark colored tiles are what have been used on roofs all the time. Now the new change is to go for light colored roofs. You must have noticed that people prefer light-colored roofs in their homes.
The reason is pretty logical as the light colors are less heat-absorbent and provides a chance to keep the home cool and save on the power bills. So will you go for light colored roof for your next house or the dark tile is too hard to let go?

Flat Roofs Over Pitched Roofs

The two trends mentioned above are not as visible as this one. We thought that time would never come when people will choose flat roofs over pitched roofs but guess what; flat roofs are number one choice of most house owners now.
There are a number of reasons for that change. First of all, there is a huge difference in cost of a flat roof and pitched roof. Secondly, from the roofers’ point of view, there is less efforts and energy required to build a flat roof than a pitched roof. Lastly, flat roofs are easy to maintain than the pitched roofs.

Roof Coating on the Rise

Roof coatings have pretty much become a thing because people like to cover their roofs in order to make them less heat-absorbent. If we talk about the type of roof coatings available then acrylic, silicone, latex, and polyurethane coatings are a few of them.
Although these roof coatings are not cheap, people are still going for them just because of return on investment is too good to deny. Roof coatings are especially very popular in areas which receive a fair amount of sun heat in every season.

5 Reasons Why You Should Prefer Flat Roofs for value and comfort?

You must be aware of different types of roofs used in a house. Generally, the trend in the UK is to go for the high slope roofs. However, if you have paid attention to the architecture around the area, you must have noticed that modern homes prefer flat roofs.

And we say why not? Since flat roofs bring so much value, comfort, and ease to the constructor as well as the owner of the home.

Following are the five reasons why you should prefer flat roofs and say goodbye to the giant high sloped ones;

Flat Roofs are Cost Effective

Flat roofs are cheaper as compared to any other form of roofs prevalent in the real estate market. The reason is obvious – they use less material. Also, there is no such thought goes behind the structure and symmetry of flat roofs.
There are two reasons for cost effectiveness of flat roof; one the less material is used and second, the roofers don’t charge hefty labor fee.

They are Roofer’s Dream Job

Just by the looking at the flat roof and high sloped roof, you will be able to judge which one is more difficult to build? The roofers love the flat roof because it requires less labor and takes not as much of time to be constructed. Also, there are very few chances to go wrong or make a mistake with flat roofs.

Flat Roofs are Easy to Maintain

Flat roofs are easy to maintain because of a really simple fact – it is easy to climb on them. A person can even walk easily and inspect the surface closely.
Also, if you hire a roofing company for maintenance checkups, then they would charge you less for a flat roof since they can do their job in no time.

Flat Roofs Give No Room for Heat to Escape

Often, people with high sloped roof say things like how it sucks up all the heat and it is hard to keep the house warm in chilly winters. Well, there are no such issues with the flat roofs. In fact, they make the house more cozy and temperate in extreme weather.

Flat Roofs Provide More Space to Be Creative

This one is for sure the best advantage of having flat roofs. You can create a small area there for just sitting or better yet, a small garden would look absolutely amazing on your flat roof.

Just imagine going to the top of your house and lying there watching the dark night and brightest stars shining on your face. We don’t think you can create a better “me” place in the house than a small establishment on your flat roof.

Common Flat Roofing Problems

Flat roofs seem to be quite attractive and feasible. If you reside in Halifax, flat roof construction shall provide your house a unique look. Creativity with flat roofs is way more than those associated with the sloped ones. They also provide greater stability. For instance, to climb and to inspect a horizontal surface is quite easy when compared to that of an arched surface. A basic horizontal roof is built with an under layer covered with top coat. Modified bitumen, PVC or rubber material can be used for coating purposes. In addition to this, flat tops maintain greater amount of stability. In terms of costs, horizontal roofs are much cheaper. Their reconstruction and repair mostly lies within an affordable range.

Horizontal roofs vs. inclined roofs:

However, many of us might not be aware of the hard times a flat ceiling may go through. Horizontal roof issues might not be huge initially. However, if allowed to persist, may result in the compromised integrity of a large area of ceiling. Costs, strength and creativity might go with flat surfaces, but sloped surfaces offer better snow clearance and large area coverage benefits.
Integrity comes in greater amount with horizontal surfaces, but an increased lifespan follows pitched tops. Two arched pieces meeting at a high point divides the strength into two strong surfaces, which gains an edge over the strength provided by a single top.

Flat roof troubles:

Water leakage happens frequently with flat roofs. Water tends to accumulate into the roof’s material and leaks through the ceiling.
Blisters are another common issue associated with a flat top. It happens when moisture traps between the layers of the roof. Blisters interrupt the integrity of the ceiling as well as compromise its appearance.

Flat Roof Repair In Milnsbridge, Huddersfield

We have just conducted a flat roof repair in Milnsbridge. The centre of the roof was leaking which was causing damage to the bedroom ceiling below. The customer wanted to avoid having the flat roof re-done if possible and wanted a repair instead.

After close inspection we located the leaks in the felt roof, the water was coming in through the joints and finding its way through the base felt onto the ceiling below. As the leak had been found early it hadn’t caused any structural damage, meaning the roof could be repaired without having to replace the boards or green mineral.

To conduct the repair, we removed the white spa from the roof and brushed off all the dust to ensure the surface was as clean as possible. We then applied tar to the damaged section of the flat roof, we implemented 2 layers to provide adequate protection. Once the tar had dried we then replaced the white spa back on top, this helps to soak up rain water.

We have been in touch with the customer since we completed the work and they are happy with the flat roof repair. Especially because it had rained heavily after we completed the work. We will be back in touch with the customer in a couple of months to ensure that the flat roof repair is still water tight.

After Eagle Roofing all our work is fully guaranteed so we like to communicate with our customers from time to time to ensure they are completely satisfied.
